Dartmouth Castle

Dartmouth castle Dartmouth castle has stood for 600 years as the guardian   of the Dart estuary. It was one of the most advanced fortresses of its time and positioned superbly to protect Dartmouth’s wealthy medieval merchants. Enjoy the many tales that can be found of the castle from the Tudor period and civil war, up to WWII and beyond, including a fully recreated Victorian gun battery. The beautiful grounds also form the ideal location to watch the river, or to picnic. Or, why not travel by water to the castle?

Dartmouth Tourist Information

Discover Dartmouth is the official networked tourist information centre for Dartmouth, providing tourists and locals with information, ranging from booking serviced accommodation, to information about local events, attractions & travel arrangements.

Dartmouth Railway

Steam TravelExperience a fabulous journey on the Dartmouth Railway, taking one of the steam locomotives on the one and only line linking Dartmouth to the English Riviera.

Spend the day exploring Torbay before making your return trip to Dartmouth, taking in some of the exceptional views of the Torbay coastline, the river Dart and surrounding areas.

Dartmouth Pottery

Situated in the south Devon town of Dartmouth, Dartmouth Pottery was established in 1947 and still operates. The products are similar in many respects to traditional Devon wares and range from beautiful art pottery to finely moulded Toby jugs and sporting tankards. More recent items include money boxes and models animals. Find various items at flea markets and antique fairs for an 'affordable collection'.

 

Beaches & The Coast

Whether you prefer a great sweep of flat golden sand such as Bigbury, the spectacular Slapton Sands backed by an extraordinary freshwater lagoon, or the wooded sun trap of Blackpool Sands, you are bathing on some of the safest, cleanest and most beautiful beaches in the country!

Alternatively, enjoy part of the stunning 630-mile South West Coastal Path, which runs the length of the South Hams coast.

Houses & Gardens


Visit Sharpham Vineyards, situated on the banks of the River Dart near Totnes for a tour of the exceptional wine & cheese making facilities, wine tasting and more. Sharpham have been producing wines and unpasteurised cheeses for over twenty years to local, national and international acclaim.

Or take time to enjoy the historical Buckfast Abbey in Buckfastleigh, which is steeped in history and provides home to a Roman Catholic community of Bennedictine Monks. Take a tour of the beautiful abbey and gardens and purchase some of the famous Bennedictine Honey or Buckfast Tonic Wine, the products which enable the abbey to be self-sufficient.

Alternatively if you like to visit beautiful country homes and gardens you could visit Coleton Fishacre, a luxuriant garden by the sea, with an Arts & Crafts-style house, featuring Art Deco-influenced interiors or Greenway, a glorious woodland garden on the banks of the River Dart, with an atmosphere of romantic wilderness. A further option is Royal Avenue Gardens situated in the heart of Dartmouth adjacent to the boat float, which are frequently referred to as the Council’s `Jewel in the Crown’, featuring ornamental gardens with a mixture of permanent structural planting and season displays, an extensive patio area and the recently restored bandstand and ornamental fountain.

For families, the South Hams has a multitude of attractions to cater for all ages and interests, including the excellent Woodlands Leisure Park at Dartmouth, which offers an exhilerating variety of family rides, animals, play zones and indoor attractions.
